Folk’s Butterfly Farm Conservation
Conservation is the careful protection and preservation of natural resources and the environment. At Folk’s Butterfly Farm, we believe in the conservation of all living things and the land which we inhabit. We take pride in developing habitat and features in our garden area that benefit multiple species. One of the most important conservation methods we have employed is planting habitats for multiple species. Milkweed for Monarchs is a very high priority. We have planted many different species of milkweed including Incarnata, Tuberosa and Physocarpa Oscar. In addition, plantings of dill, parsley, fennel, white Turtlehead, Wafer Ash, Paw Paws, Hops, Pipevine and Spicebush as well as many nectar plants grace the property in an effort to provide an enticing environment for pollinators.
In an effort to control water runoff and erosion, we have installed three rain gardens in the driveway out front of our venue. The rain gardens are designed to catch water runoff and allow it to percolate into the ground. The water gardens are planted with additional host plants and nectar sources to entice various pollinators to make a stop at Folk’s Butterfly Farm.
All of our conservation efforts are on display at our venue which is open to the public as an educational facility to introduce the public to nature, the environment and important pollinators that enable humanity to enjoy many of the foods and beverages we enjoy. Education of generations is important as people will not protect something which they do not understand. Young children should be allowed to marvel in the metamorphosis of various species of butterflies so that they understand how important it is to protect the environment that those species thrive in as well as the host plants that those pollinators depend upon.
