Butterfly Legend

Of all of his children the Creator loved his human children the most. They obeyed his laws and respected all living things. To show his appreciation he took black from the maiden’s hair, yellow from the corn and blue from the desert sky and fashioned them into butterflies for his children to enjoy. The creator also gave them beautiful voices so that they could sing the wishes of the human children for him to hear so that they could be granted. Soon some of the other forest creatures started to complain. The birds protested to the Great Spirit that they were the only ones that were to have the gift of beautiful song and it wasn’t right that is was also given to the butterflies. The creator became angry with the forest creatures and took away the butterfly’s song. But before ascending to his sky lodge above the clouds the Great One instructed his human children; If you ever want a wish to be granted whisper it to a butterfly. Because they make no sound, they cannot tell your wish to anyone but me and with their bright colors I will easily see them as they rise above the clouds where your wish will be granted.
